Geographical location
The castle is located on the eastern outskirts of Marktoberdorf in the immediate vicinity of the baroque parish church of St. Martin . From here the two-kilometer-long Kurfürstenallee, a lime tree avenue from the 18th century, leads southeast to a vantage point outside the city. In the garden of the castle there is an underground concert hall of the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf.
history
According to documentary records, there was a castle in Oberdorf as early as 1424. Between 1505 and 1517, Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Lichtenau had a new late Gothic building carried out. It was greatly expanded in 1598 and 1599. This castle existed until 1722, then it was demolished and replaced by today's baroque castle by Prince-Bishop Alexander Sigismund , Count Palatine of the Rhine . The builder was Johann Georg Fischer from Oberdorf im Allgäu . As the last prince-bishop of Augsburg, Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony died here in 1812 , who was also the last elector of Trier.
After secularization , the Bavarian state took over the manor house and the royal district court and the Oberdorf rent office moved here in 1819. The measuring authority followed in 1864 - today's land surveying office. In 1876 the preparatory school moved into the castle and stayed there until 1923. Until 1967 the castle was the seat of the district administration's office. In 1967 there was a fire in the castle and the west and south wings were then empty until the building was renovated in 1984.
The castle has been the seat of the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf since 1984 and the seat of the Marktoberdorf land surveying office since 1996.
