Hopfen Castle

The ruins of the castle hop is on a hill above the Füssener district hops on the lake in Ostallgäu in Bavarian Swabia . Some remains of the wall have survived from the high medieval castle complex.

history

In the foreground remains of the curtain wall, behind it the ruins of the chapel and the residential tower

The origins of Hopfen Castle are unclear. Possibly it is to be equated with the "solid castle" into which the Augsburg counter-bishop Wigolt withdrew in 1078 during the investiture controversy .

From 1172 to 1191, a Guelph family of servants sat on the fortress , which named itself after the castle. The complex then went to the bishopric of Augsburg and served as the official residence of the Füssen provost until 1322 .

With the new construction of the High Castle at Füssen, the castle seems to have become dispensable and began to deteriorate.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the ruins were exploited as a quarry for the reconstruction of the St. Mang monastery in Füssen .

In 1999, the city of Füssen began carefully renovating the remains of the castle under the professional guidance of a medieval archaeologist . The conservation measures will continue over the next few years.

description

In the course of the renovation measures , the meter-thick layers of rubble above the Burgplatz were cleared and the exposed masonry preserved. The remains of the wall are still up to three meters high. For structural reasons, some wall openings had to be added.

The structure of the castle complex is clearly recognizable again today. The slightly elevated core castle with its tower-like main building ( residential tower ) and a chapel was preceded by a large forecourt to the east. In the northeast, two trenches and a bailey protected the fortress, which was secured on the other sides by the steep slopes.

As the earliest stone castle in the Allgäu, Hopfen Castle is of particular importance for castle history. The simple curtain wall is not yet reinforced by towers or bastions .

Today, however, the renovated castle ruins are mainly visited because of the view of the Ammergau Alps and the Tannheimer Mountains . It was also included in a cross-border marketing concept that aims to use the wealth of castles in the Ostallgäu-Ausserfern region for tourism.
