Emil Naumann

Emil Naumann (born September 8, 1827 in Berlin , † June 23, 1888 in Dresden ) was a German composer and church musician.

Emil Naumann was the son of the physician Moritz Naumann (1798–1871) and grandson of the conductor Johann Gottlieb Naumann . After studying music in Frankfurt am Main , he was a student of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1842 to 1844 . In 1850 he was appointed court church music director in Berlin to succeed Otto Nicolai . In this function he published the work “On the introduction of the psalm song into the evangelical church” in 1856. Naumann performed the “Psalms on all Sundays and Sundays,” composed for the Royal Cathedral Choir on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV . Holidays of the Evangelical Church Year ”in three volumes. From 1873 he taught at the Dresden Conservatory . One of his students there was Georg Pittrich (1870–1934). Naumann died in Dresden in 1888 and was buried in the Trinity cemetery there.

His music theory writings also include “The Tonkunst in der Culturgeschichte” (2 parts, both 1869) and “Illustrierte Musikgeschichte” (2 parts, both 1885).
