Sergej Movsesjan (in English transcription Sergei Movsesian , Armenian Սերգեյ Մովսեսյան ; born November 3, 1978 in Tbilisi ) is a world class Slovak chess master who plays for Armenia and belongs to the Armenian diaspora in Prague .

Life

Movsesjan, like Tigran Petrosyan , was born as an Armenian in Georgia . His enormous chess talent was promoted early on. He was accepted into the Soviet chess school before the collapse of the USSR , but further support in the early 1990s, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union , was doubtful and Movsesjan's parents settled in Pardubice with their two sons in 1993 . Movsesjan learned the Czech language and took part in both the Czech (2nd 1997, 1st 1998) and Slovak championships (1st 1995, 2nd 2002). At the Armenian Championship in 1996, he was fifth. In 1997 he won in Hamburg . At the FIDE world championship according to the knockout system , 1999 in Las Vegas , he switched off Péter Lékó in the round of 16 after a playoff in rapid chess , then lost in the quarter-finals to the later vice world champion Vladimir Hakobjan . Movsesjan first represented Armenia internationally and then played for the Czech Republic, but was denied his Czech citizenship, whereupon he became Slovak in 2002. In 2002 he won in Sarajevo ahead of Alexei Schirow , Ivan Sokolov and Alexei Drejew . In 2003 he defeated the Icelander Hannes Stefánsson in Reykjavík in a competition with 4.5-1.5 (+3 = 3 −0). In 2003 and 2004 he was second in Sarajevo. Movsesjan also celebrated numerous victories in rapid chess: in 1999 he won the Porcelain Cup in Dresden , as well as rapid chess tournaments in Prague in 1999 and Warsaw in 2004. In January 2008, Movsesjan won in group B of the Corus chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee , a round -robin tournament in the category 15 ( Elo average 2618), and thus qualified for the main tournament in 2009. Movsesjan announced in December 2010 that he would play for Armenia again in the future, but would definitely like to keep his Slovak citizenship. He has three children with the Czech chess grandmaster Petra Krupková (* 1976), from whom he has been divorced since 2008. Movsesjan lives in Prague with his wife Júlia (nee Kočetková).

National team

Movsesjan took part in eight Chess Olympiads , in 1998 and 2000 for the Czech national team, in 2002 , 2004 , 2008 and 2010 for Slovakia and in 2012 and 2014 for Armenia. In 2012 he became Olympic champion with the Armenian team. With Armenia he also took part in the team world championships in 2011 and 2013, he won with the team in 2011 and at the same time achieved the third-best individual result on the second board. At the European Team Championships took Movsesjan 1997 and 1999 with the Czech Republic, in 2011 and 2013, with Armenia part.

Movsesjan played in the Czech extra league in the 1995/96 season for ŠK Sokol Kolín , and has been playing for ŠK Pardubice since 1996 , with whom he became Czech team champion in 2000 , 2005 , 2006 and 2007 . Movsesjan played in the German federal chess league from 1997 to 2005 for the Berlin club SF Neukölln , since 2005 he has been playing for OSG Baden-Baden , with whom he won ten consecutive German championships from 2006 to 2015 and three times in a row from 2017 to 2019. In the Austrian Bundesliga (until 2003 State League), he played from 1999 to 2002 for the SV-northeast Melk Wachau , in the 2008-09 season for the champion SK Husek Vienna and in season 2019/20 for the SK Sparkasse Bad Vöslau .

In the Spanish team championship , Movsesjan played for CA Reverté Albox in 2005, 2006 and 2008 and became champions in 2005 , and in 2017 for CAC Beniajan Duochess . Movsesjan won the Dutch master class in 2000 , 2001 , 2004 , 2005 and 2006 with De Variant Breda , in the Russian team championship he has been playing for the Saint Petersburg chess federation since 2006 and became champion with them in 2013. In the Bosnian Premijer Liga he played for ŠK Bosna Sarajevo from 2002 to 2008 and was the Bosnian team champion with them from 2002 to 2005 and 2008, in France he played for Vandœuvre Echecs and Asnières - Le Grand Echiquier . In the Slovak Extraliga he played from 1994 to 1998 for the ŠK Medea Martin , in the 2000/01 season for the ŠK Bestex Nové Zámky and in the 2014/15 season for the champion ŠO ŠKM Angelus Stará Ľubovňa . Movsesjan has participated in the European Club Cup fourteen times since 2000 and won it in 2000 and 2002 with the ŠK Bosna Sarajevo and in 2011 with the Saint Petersburg Chess Federation .
