David Navara (born March 27, 1985 in Prague ) is a Czech chess master of the world's elite.

Life

Navara learned to play chess when he was six. In the development of his talent he found support from important trainers, u. a. by Luděk Pachman and Vlastimil Jansa . Navara won the Czech youth championships in his age category from 1993 to 1995 and represented his home country as the best Czech youth at numerous international youth championships: in 1997 he was third at the U14 World Championship, and vice world champion in the U16 category in 1998. In 1999, at the age of 14, he became International Master . In 2001 he played for the Czech Republic at the European Team Championship in León and achieved an excellent result of 7 out of 9.

In 2002 he was awarded the title of Grand Master , and in 2003 he won the Polanica-Zdrój Open . Navara won the national championship of the Czech Republic nine times, most recently in 2019. In 2005, he played a short two-game match in Prague against ex-world champion Anatoli Karpow in a 1: 1 draw, both games ended in a draw . In August 2007 Navara won the rapid chess open of the Chess Classic in Mainz, ahead of 61 other grandmasters with a total of 762 participants. In 2009 he came in 5th place at the European Championships in Budva in March , lost a rapid chess match against Vasyl Ivanchuk with 2.5: 5.5 in May and was eliminated in the third round of the 2009 World Chess Cup against Sergej Karjakin in November . In 2010 he finished 22nd at the European Championships in Rijeka in March , lost a rapid chess competition to Judit Polgár with 2: 6 in April and won the Czech national championship in May in Ostrava with 8.5 points from 9 games. In June 2011 he won a competition against Sergej Movsesjan in Prague with 3.5: 2.5 (+1 = 5).

At the 2011 World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk , Navara made it to the quarter-finals, where he was eliminated by Alexander Grishchuk . Previously, there had been a notable incident in Navara's match against Oleksandr Mojissejenko . Navara had accidentally touched a figure and Mojissejenko initially insisted that Navara must move this figure. The referee decided in favor of Navara, Mojissejenko accepted this and continued the game. In the further course Navara achieved a clear winning position, but then offered a draw because he did not want to win the game despite a possible violation of the rules. Both players received a fairness prize.

Navara graduated from Charles University in Prague with a master's degree in logic in July 2010. Since then he has been a professional chess player. In May 2019 he was ranked 27th in the world as the best Czech player.

National team

Navara has participated in all nine Chess Olympiads since 2002 , playing on the first board seven times. At the 2012 Chess Olympiad in Istanbul he was the best player on the second board. From 2001 to 2019 Navara took part with the Czech team in all nine European team championships , achieving the second-best result in 2001 and the third-best result on the second board in 2003 and the third-best result on the top board in 2017. In 2001 he also achieved the third best rating of all participants.

In the Czech extra league Navara played for the ŠK DP Mladí Prague from 1996 to 1999 , from 1999 to 2003 for the ŠK Dům armády Prague , from 2003 to 2011 and in the 2012/13 season for the ŠK Mahrla Prague , with whom he played Czech in 2009 Became team champion, as well as in the 2011/12 season and again since 2013 for the 1st Novoborský ŠK , with whom he was Czech team champion in 2012, 2014 , 2015 , 2016 , 2017 and 2018 . With the 1st Novoborský ŠK , Navara also took part in the European Club Cup from 2012 to 2019 . He won with the team in 2013 and reached second place in 2014, 2018 and 2019, in the individual ranking he achieved the second best result on the third board in 2017 and 2018.

From 2006 to 2008 Navara played in the German Bundesliga for the TSV Bindlach shareholder , and since 2012 he has been playing for SV Mülheim-Nord . In the British Four Nations Chess League , Navara played for the Slough Sharks from 2005 to 2007 , and in the French team championship he has played for Mulhouse Philidor since 2005 . In the Polish team championship , Navara has been playing for KSz HetMaN Szopienice since 2005 (since 2015 WASKO HETMAN Katowice) and became Polish team champion in 2008 , 2010 , 2013 , 2015 , 2016 , 2017 , 2018 and 2019 . In Spain, Navara played for SCC Sabadell in 2010 and 2013 , and he was also used in Greek leagues. In the Chinese team championship in 2014 Navara played for master Jiangsu , in the Dutch meester class he played for master En Passant Bunschoten-Spakenburg in the 2015/16 season . In the Slovakian Extraliga he played for REINTER Humenné in the 2016/17 season , and in the Spanish team championship in 2018 for CAC Beniajan Duochess . In the Austrian Bundesliga , Navara plays for SC MPÖ Maria Saal in the 2019/20 season .
