KARL is a German chess magazine published by Karl-Verlag in Frankfurt am Main. In the subtitle, KARL describes itself as "The cultural chess magazine". In each issue, a key topic is examined in detailed articles under various aspects.

Scope and frequency of publication, authors

The KARL magazine appears four times a year with approx. 64 pages. The publisher and editor-in-chief is FIDE master Harry Schaack . The permanent team of authors includes respected chess masters and experts such as B. the chess programmer Christian Donninger and the chess historian Michael Ehn .

As of August 2006, KARL had a print run of 5000 copies. The 3/2008 edition also appeared in an English version with the same content. Since 2013 one issue has cost 6.00 euros, from issue 3/2018 the price is 7.50 euros.

History and name

KARL appeared from November 1984 as the club magazine of Schachfreunde Schöneck . Starting with issue 02/2001, the magazine was offered nationwide and changed its content profile and appearance accordingly.

According to the publisher, the name of the magazine is on the one hand the name of a club member and on the other hand stands as an acronym for “communication, views or autonomy, realities and laurel wreaths” - aspects with which the club identified itself. The name was chosen after a survey among the readers in the first edition.
