Tassilo von Heydebrand and the Lasa
Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa (born October 17, 1818 in Berlin , † July 27, 1899 in Storchnest near Lissa , Province of Posen ) was an important German chess master and theorist of the 19th century .
origin
His parents were the Prussian Major General Heinrich von Heydebrand and the Lasa and his wife Emilie Thomann (1785-1875).
Career
Heydebrand studied law in Bonn and Berlin . From 1845 he was a diplomat in the service of Prussia , his career as ambassador led him a. a. to Stockholm , Copenhagen and Rio de Janeiro . Tassilo von Heydebrand and Lasa were married; his son Heinrich became politically active and was u. a. member of the Prussian mansion for several years .
Late 1830s came from Lasa as a student to the later after the Pleiades named Berlin chess school that is Ludwig Bledow had formed. This group of masters gave a decisive boost to the theoretical study of the game. Von der Lasa summarized this short but significant phase in chess history in the Berlin chess memoirs .
Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa is best known to today's chess world for the first publication in 1843 of the handbook of the chess game that Paul Rudolph von Bilguer had designed, but who, after his death in 1840, did not live to see his work. Von Heydebrand und der Lasa continued the work of the deceased and selflessly put his name in front of the authorship, so that the legendary book has since been known as the handbook (the "Bilguer" ). Among other things, it contained extensive analyzes of all the opening variants known at the time . Von Heydebrand und der Lasa edited four more editions up to 1874.
Beyond the handbook of the game of chess, von Heydebrand and der Lasa was a renowned chess researcher and theorist, which is proven by numerous articles in the Berlin and (since 1871) German chess newspaper and his 1897 work on the history and literature of the game of chess . He had an important collection of chess literature , a list of which he last published in 1896 exists.
In 1850 von Heydebrand and the Lasa advertised in the chess newspaper for an international chess tournament, which would have been the first of its kind and should have taken place in Trier . However, the plans did not come to fruition, the first chess tournament took place in London in 1851 .
In addition to these theoretical achievements, von Heydebrand and the Lasa was also one of the world's best players around the middle of the 19th century. His highest historical rating was 2630 in January 1852, and he headed the retrospectively calculated historical rating list from October 1851 to December 1852. He played numerous games, especially with Carl Mayet and Wilhelm Hanstein . In a competition he won against the outstanding master Howard Staunton . Against the background of his diplomatic career, von Heydebrand and the Lasa soon withdrew from the practical game.
For his tireless work in terms of chess, he was the first to be awarded honorary membership in the German Chess Federation in 1898 .
family
He married Anna Henriette Amalie von Helldorff (1831–1880) on April 24, 1860 . The couple had a son Heinrich Bernhard Adolf Thassilo (1861-1924), who married Countess Gisela Ottilie Maria von Matuschka (born March 24, 1872) in 1890.
