The Hamburg Chess Club from 1830 (HSK) is the largest and second oldest German chess club .
History of the club
The HSK was founded on May 8th, 1830 under the name Hamburgische Gesellschaft United Chess Friends and is the second oldest German chess club after the Berlin Chess Society 1827 Eckbauer . It has had its current name since December 5, 1861. In 1868 the HSK joined the North German Chess Federation, which was founded in the same year, and in 1877 the German Chess Federation immediately after it was founded.
Between 1979 and 1987 the HSK was the chess department of Hamburger SV .
Important chess players of the club included: Martin Bier , Klaus Junge , Herbert Heinicke , Gerhard Pfeiffer , Carl Ahues , Murray Chandler , Robert Huebner , John Nunn , Alexei Schirow , Matthias Wahls and Jan Gustafsson . The presidents of the German Chess Federation Walter Robinow and Emil Dähne also belonged to the HSK. On the occasion of the club's centenary, the Chess Olympiad was held in Hamburg in 1930 , and the HSK also organized tournaments with a large number of participants at other anniversaries (1885, 1905, 1910, 1955, 1980, 2005).
In 1956 and 1958, the HSK won the German team championship , most recently they were German runner- up in the 2006/07 season . The HSK has been a member of the first Bundesliga since it was founded in 1974. The HSK was also a founding member of the women's national league in 1991, but was relegated in 1995, before being promoted again two years later.
With over 700 registered players, the HSK is currently (July 2018) the German chess club with the largest number of members.
Youth chess
This also applies to the largest youth department . Since the early 1950s, the HSK has concentrated heavily on youth work; In addition, the HSK looks after several school chess groups in the greater Hamburg area. The HSK has won the German U20 youth team championship seven times (there are also three titles in other age groups and several individual titles).
