Luis Engel (born October 14, 2002 in Hamburg ) is a German chess player .

Luis Engel lives in Hamburg and plays for Hamburger SK (HSK) and is trained by FM Felix Meißner.

Life

Luis Engel was born on October 14, 2002 in Hamburg together with his twin brother Robert Engel. Luis has been attending the private high school in Brecht in the Hamburg district of St. Georg since he was 5 years old .

In the 2017/18 season, Luis Engel played for the first time in the 1st Bundesliga for the first team of the Hamburger SK, which he became part of in the 2019/20 season. In the Austrian Bundesliga he played for SK Sparkasse Jenbach in the 2019/20 season and became champion with them.

Luis Engel also successfully plays the most important game tournaments for adult single players in chess. In the Politiken Cup 2015, he earned 6.5 points from 10 games and at the Basel championship tournament in 2017 he earned 5 points from 9 games.

At the German individual championship 2017 in Apolda he reached tenth place in the overall ranking.

In October 2019 he achieved his third grandmaster norm. The title was awarded to him at the FIDE Congress in late February 2020.

At the 91st German Chess Championship in Magdeburg in 2020 he became German champion at the age of only 17.

Play style

Luis Engel is known for his aggressive style of play. He had his early successes especially in the Najdorf , a variant of the Sicilian Defense , but his opening repertoire has now expanded considerably, making it difficult for his opponents to calculate. His greatest strength is his tactical skills . His aggressive style of play not only enables regular success, but also particularly interesting and spectator-friendly games.
