Lutz Espig (born January 5, 1949 in Greiz ) is a German grandmaster in chess .

Life

He learned to play chess at the age of nine. His first club was Lok Greiz , later he played for Buna Halle . He completed a degree in mathematics and physics at the University of Halle .

Espig won the championship of the German Democratic Republic in Schwerin in 1969 , in Strausberg in 1971 and in Stralsund in 1988 . In 1988 he shared the title with Thomas Pähtz . Lutz Espig had participated in a total of 26 German championships up to 2006, 21 of them in the GDR.

In 1972 he received the title of International Master from FIDE , and in 1983 the title of Grand Master.

Team chess

He took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1988 and 1990 for the GDR and in the 1970 European Team Championship. In the German Federal Chess League Espig played in the 1990/91 season at Munich SC 1836 , in the 1994/95 season at PSV Duisburg and from 1999 to 2004 at SK König Plauen , where he also played in the 2nd Bundesliga and Oberliga .
