Lev Gutman (born September 26, 1945 in Riga , Soviet Union ) is a German grandmaster in chess and opening theorist of Latvian origin.

Life

Lev Gutman won the individual championship of the Latvian SSR in 1972 . The FIDE awarded him in 1986 the title of chess grandmaster .

In 1980 he emigrated from the USSR to Israel and played at the Chess Olympiads in Lucerne in 1982 and in Thessaloniki for the Israeli team on the third board.

He participates in numerous open tournaments, such as in 1982 at the 2nd International Chess Tournament in Linz (Austria) . In the Berlin summer of 1983 with 270 players, he finished second to fourth behind Vlastimil Hort . In 1986 he was together with Viktor Kortschnoi (winner after fine evaluation), Nigel Short and James Plaskett co-winner in the important open tournament in Lugano , which earned him his last standard for the grandmaster title. In 1987 Lev Gutman was the sole winner in the traditional Biel Open. Gutman played frequently at the Bad Wörishofen chess festival and came second in 1994, 1998 and 2000.

From 1990 to 1993 he was German rapid chess champion four times in a row .

Gutman also excelled as a book author, especially in the field of opening theory in self-publishing . He was the last editor of the discontinued periodical Das Schach-Archiv , which dealt with chess openings.

In September 2015, SV Lingen hosted a grandmaster tournament on the occasion of Gutman's 70th birthday. The winner of the tournament was the Greek grandmaster Stelios Halkias with 6 points from 9 games, Gutman himself achieved eighth place with 3.5 points.

Gutman lives in Germany and played for the chess club SC Melle 03 ( Lower Saxony ), then for SV Lingen . Gutman played in the 1st Bundesliga in the 1983/84 season for SG Enger / Spenge , from 1984 to 1988 for SV 03/25 Koblenz , from 1990 to 1992 for FTG Frankfurt and in the 2019/20 season for SV Lingen . Gutman played in the Austrian Bundesliga in the 2015/16 season for SV Jacques Lemans St. Veit . He also played in the Belgian and French team championships, in 1995 he took part in the European Club Cup with Hapoel Rischon LeZion .
