Eckhard Schmittdiel (born May 13, 1960 in Dortmund ) is a German chess player .

Life

Schmittdiel did not join a chess club until he was 15. His first major success was in 1984 when he won the Dähne Cup , and in 1986 he became NRW champion. In 1987/88 he won in Augsburg . In 1989 he was tied with Vlastimil Hort at the top of the German championship in Bad Neuenahr . The playoff ended in a draw, so that Hort became champion thanks to the better rating. In 1990 he finished first in Prague with Romuald Mainka . In 1994 he won in Gausdal , in 1999 and 2000 at the championship tournament in Dortmund .

In 1988 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master and in 1994 he became a Grand Master .

Most recently Schmittdiel won the Open in Crailsheim 2009 and the rapid chess tournament Filderpokal 2010.

Since the 1989/90 season Schmittdiel has played in the German Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga. There he played for the clubs SF Dortmund-Brackel, SG Porz , Schachverein Tübingen, SG Bochum 31 , TV Tegernsee , Stuttgarter Schachfreunde , SC Hansa Dortmund and BCA Augsburg .

In addition, he was also temporarily active in the Austrian State League for SK Absam.
