Kaoma (Zambia)

Kaoma , formerly and on Lozi Mankoya , is a small market town in the Western Province of Zambia, west of Kafue National Park . It has around 14,000 inhabitants and can be reached from Lusaka via the Great West Road . It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 162,568 inhabitants (2000 census).

Kaoma is a rural district. The city is the market for its products. It has since become a tourist destination and is developing beyond its surrounding area. The Kafue National Park is a little east in the immediate vicinity.

Infrastructure

Kaoma has an 80-bed hospital for the 200,000 people in the district and elementary and secondary schools. There are two petrol stations and a number of shops, as the place is the commercial center of the Kafue region and is easily accessible by road. It also has a small airfield. Kaoma has recently been connected to the national power grid.

Social

There are still 150,000 refugees in the surrounding area, mostly from Angola , who are looked after by UNHCR , which gives Kaoma a considerable economic boost, as these people can only be looked after in cooperation with the local population. This creates jobs and many projects, which mainly concern seeds, artificial fertilizers, cultivation methods, livestock farming and schools and bring foreign currency to Zambia. In the meantime, this has brought about a great deal of development in this purely agricultural district.

The name Kaoma is also a common surname in the city.

tourism

Every year the Kazanga Festival is held, where traditional costumes and choirs are presented. The city center offers a night life.
