Stuttgart Chess Friends 1879

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stuttgarter Schachfreunde 1879 are a chess club in Stuttgart .

The club was created in its current form through the merger of two chess clubs in 1971. The older forerunner was the chess club founded in 1879 and later the Stuttgart 1879 chess club , which was the center of Württemberg chess life until the Second World War. From 1887 to 1922, Kommerzienrat Otto Rosenfeld († 1935) was chairman, who founded the Swabian Chess Federation (today's Chess Association Württemberg ) in 1910 and headed it until 1923. The fate of Rosenfeld before and after the seizure of power by the National Socialists was dealt with literarily in 2007 in the story "Ehrenvorsitzender Rosenblum" by Peter Schweickhardt.

In the tradition of a workers' chess club founded before the First World War , the Stuttgart-Ost chess club stood. In 1952 he named himself Stuttgarter Schachfreunde 1907 . Thanks to intensive youth work , "07" soon took the lead in chess in Württemberg. This development was crowned in 1968 by winning the German team championship. A well-known player at that time was Dieter Mohrlok .

After the above-mentioned clubs merged, the joint club soon took on its current name, Stuttgarter Schachfreunde 1879 . The first team rose to the German Chess League in 2002 . The top players at the time included Christian Gabriel , Rainer Buhmann and Jörg Hickl . Due to the deterioration in the economy and the withdrawal of the main sponsor, this phase did not last long, in 2005 the Stuttgart-based SF rose again from the top class.

Rebuilding has been necessary since then. In the 2010/11 season, the first and second teams played in the Oberliga Württemberg. The first team was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga this season, where the amateur club could not last long. By winning the Württemberg championship board and the championship in the Oberliga Württemberg in the 2018/19 season, he was again promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South in April 2019.
