Christian Gabriel (* 3. March 1975 in Reşiţa ) is a German chess - Grand Master of Romanian origin.

He comes from a chess-loving family. His father Josef (* 1945), from whom he learned the game, and his older brother Robert (* 1969), who holds the title of FIDE master , are also good chess players. Christian played his first chess tournament at the age of 7; In 1987 he won the Romanian C youth championship.

In the same year the family moved to Germany. There he was also C youth champion and took part in six youth world championships in the following years . At the U14 youth world championship in 1989 in Aguadilla , Puerto Rico, he was third behind Wesselin Topalow and Wladimir Kramnik . In 1990 in Singapore he finished 9th at the U16 World Cup. In 1991 in Brazil he finished 5th at the U18 World Cup. Also in 1991 he was third at the U16 European Championship in Romania . As early as 1988 at the European Cadet Championships in Sweden (at the end of December in Stockholm ), Christian Gabriel surprisingly became vice European champion. He won the 2nd SKA youth chess tournament in Altensteig in 1993 by a large margin over Michael Bezold , Peter Luther and other international champions. At the Junior World Championships in 1993 in the city of Calicut in India , he finished 5th. In 1995 in Halle an der Saale he was eleventh (80 participants) in the Junior World Championship, which Roman Slobodjan won.

He graduated from the chess high school in Altensteig and was trained by Luděk Pachman , Miroslav Filip and Lothar Vogt . He received the title of Grand Master in 1996 after meeting four standards between October 1995 and May 1996. But then he decided against a professional career and began studying law at the University of Konstanz , which he completed with the second state examination.

In 1997 he was appointed to the German national team for the first time on the occasion of the European Championship in Pula . At the European team championship in 1999 in Batumi , he was also part of the German team and achieved third place with this. In 1998 he was a substitute player at the Chess Olympiad in Elista , where he scored 3.5 points from 6 games.

Gabriel played in the German Federal Chess League in the 1992/93 season for VfL Sindelfingen , from 1993 to 1995 for FC Bayern Munich , with whom he became German team champion in 1995, from 1995 to 1999 and from 2003 to 2014 for Solingen SG 1868 , with which he became champion in 1997 , and from 2001 to 2003 for the Stuttgart SF . In the 2015/16 season he will play again for FC Bayern Munich. At the same time, Gabriel played in the National League A of the Swiss team championship until 2007 for the Zurich chess company , with which he became team champion in 1999 , 2002 , 2003 and 2005 and took part in the European Club Cup in 2006 .

Gabriel is in the Bavarian since 2006 financial management busy and deputy director of the tax office in Gunzenhausen . In addition to chess, he also plays Janus chess and made it to the European runner-up. He also practices Taekwondo and wears the black belt there.
