Moving possibilities of a Janus

The Janus is placed between the knight and the rook and moves like a combination of bishop and knight. This piece corresponds to the archbishop or cardinal in various other chess variants. The larger board creates an additional 16 fields (i1 to i8 and j1 to j8). The fields i2, j2 as well as i7 and j7 are filled with pawns.

On the starting grid, the white queen stands to the right of the white king and the black queen to the left of the black king. Unlike other 10x8 chess variants, the king moves to the B or I line in castling. The corresponding tower is placed on the C or H line.

Due to his combination of both moves, Janus is the only piece able to checkmate the opposing king on his own (see illustration). However, he cannot force mate without further assistance.
