Olivér Mihók (born June 23, 1993 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian chess grandmaster who was part of the German youth squad when he was a child .

Career

In 1998, at the age of four, Olivér Mihók learned to play chess from his father László Mihók, who holds the title of FIDE master in chess and has worked as a coach in the Hungarian chess field for many years. At that time Olivér lived with his parents in Neuruppin , as his father worked as a civil engineer in Brandenburg . Right at the beginning Olivér's chess talent showed and László Mihók decided to train his son. In the same year Olivér took part in his first chess tournament in Berlin , where he came 14th out of 31 participants.

Olivér Mihók achieved a first major success when he won the first unofficial German U8 championship in 2001, which was held by the Saxon State Association. At that time he belonged to the Berlin chess club (BSC) Rehberge , for which his father also played. In 2002 he won the Berlin U10 championship.

Because of the better promotion of youth, Olivér Mihók then moved to the Brandenburg chess club SV Glück on Rüdersdorf . In 2003 he finished second at the German U10 individual championships and qualified for the European youth chess championships in Budva / Montenegro , where he achieved a good 8th place. At the beginning of the following year, in February 2004, the ten-year-old Olivér Mihók took 14th place at the Zuzmara Open in Aggtelek, northern Hungary , beating Andras Meszaros for the first time an international champion in the first round . In the summer of 2004 he took 15th place in the German youth individual championships in the U12 class in Willingen. In the same year he won the U12 age group of the European Union Youth Championship in Mureck, Austria , and at the youth world championships in Chersonissos / Crete in the U12 age group he finished 7th to 15th. In 2005 and 2006 he won the Hungarian individual championships in the U12 and U14 age groups. In 2007 he won the silver medal with the Hungarian team in the U16 age group at the Youth Chess Olympiad in Singapore . In the same year, at the age of 14, he was awarded the FIDE championship title. At the U18 European Team Championships in 2008 and 2009, he won a bronze and a gold medal as a member of the second and first Hungarian team. After achieving two IM standards - one at the First Saturday April IM B tournament in Budapest in 2007 and one at the 2010 European Chess Championships in Rijeka - and having exceeded the 2400 Elo mark, Olivér Mihók was awarded the title of International Master in 2010.

With his victory at the First Saturday tournament 1. Borloy Androvitzky Karoly Memorial GM Aug 2010 with 8.5 points from 11 games, Olivér Mihók fulfilled his first grandmaster norm. He achieved his second grandmaster norm in 2014 when he took first place in the 31st International Böblinger Open with 7 out of a possible 9 points. The third and final fulfillment of the norm was achieved by winning the Chess tournament in Kecskemet in August 2015 with again 7 points from 9 games. Based on these results, he was awarded the title of Grand Master at the 86th FIDE International Congress in Abu Dhabi in September 2015 .

In the top Hungarian league, the NB I. Szabó László csoport, Mihók played in the 2006/07 season for Csuti Antal SK Zalaegerszeg, in the 2007/08 season for Aquaprofit NTSK and has been part of Makói Spartacus Vasas Sportegyesület's team since 2008. Olivér Mihók has played two seasons in the 1st German Chess League : In the 2011/2012 season he reached a midfield position with Schachfreunde Berlin in 1903 , but was only used in two matches. In the 2015/2016 season he played for the newly promoted Erfurter SK and got 3.5 points from 11 games. In the Austrian Bundesliga he played for SK Husek Wien in the 2009/10 and 2012/13 seasons, in the Slovakian Extraliga in the 2012/13 season for NŠK Nitra and since 2017 for the ŠK AQUAMARIN Podhájska. Mihók played for KSK Rochade Eupen-Kelmis in the Belgian Interclubs in the 2019/20 season .

In June 2019 he and his Hungarian team won the Mitropa Cup in Radenci .
