Limenas Chersonisou
Limenas Chersonisou ( Greek Λιμένας Χερσονήσου ( m. Sg. ), Limenas Chersonisou , "port of the peninsula" ) is a former fishing village on the north coast of Crete . The place is about 26 km east of Heraklion and about 43 km west of Agios Nikolaos . Colloquially, the name is usually abbreviated to Límin Chersonísou . In 2011 the community had 3,165 inhabitants.
geography
Limenas Chersonisou is located in the northeast of the island. The next largest city, Heraklion, is about 26 kilometers to the west. To the south of the town are the villages of Chersonissos, Piskopiano and Koutouloufari , which are more geared towards tourism for families than mass tourism.
economy
Limenas Chersonisos is very much shaped by tourism . There are numerous shops, bars, restaurants and discos in the town center. Because of the nightlife on the waterfront, the place is especially popular with younger people. Away from the main streets, there are also quieter areas of the town with restaurants and residential buildings that are less touristy. In addition to tourism, agriculture is another important industry. In 1995 an aquarium open to tourists from April to October, the Aquaworld Aquarium, opened .
Attractions
In the town center there are some smaller excavations from antiquity . To the north of today's town is the ancient ruins of Chersonaos (Chersonesos), which is named in the Tabula Peutingeriana Cresonesso and, together with Arsinoe, was affiliated with the city of Lyctus .
As Chersonesus in Creta, Chersonesos is a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church.
