Jan Michael Sprenger (born November 26, 1982 in Cologne ) is a German chess player and philosopher.

Life and Achievements

Sprenger learned the game at the age of six and received his first chess training at the Cologne Chess Friends Club . In 2001 he achieved the title of International Master . In 2002 he played with the German national team at the Mitropacup 2002 in Leipzig . Sprenger has held the title of Grand Master since April 2018 .

Sprenger studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Bonn . From 2008 to 2017 he worked at the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands; since November 2017 he has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Turin .

Sprenger achieved a grandmaster norm in the chess Bundesliga in the 2005/06 season . In the Bundesliga he won against, among others, the FIDE world champion of 2004, Rustam Kasimjanov , and the long-standing fourth in the world rankings Alexei Schirow . He achieved his other GM standards in the European Club Cup in 2016 and 2017 .

With an Elo rating of 2496 (as of April 2018), he is in 47th place in the German Elo ranking list, Sprenger had his highest rating to date of 2537 from January to April 2008.

In Germany, Sprenger first played for the Kölner Schachfreunde club , in 2002 he switched to Godesberger SK , with whom he played in the 1st Bundesliga in the 2002/03 , 2005/06 and 2007/08 seasons . Since the 2015/16 season he has been playing for Schachfreunde Berlin in the 1st Bundesliga, with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup in 2018. In the Dutch Meester class he played for Utrecht from 2007 to 2009 , from 2011 to 2013 for the Stukkenjagers from Tilburg, with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup 2012, since 2013 he has played for the Leidsch Schaakgenootschap , with which he played from 2014 to 2017 as well Also took part in the European Club Cup in 2019 and became Dutch team champion in 2018 . In the Belgian Division 1 / Série A Sprenger played from 2004 to 2009 for Cercle Royal d'Echecs de Liège , with whom he won the Belgian team championship in 2007 , in the Austrian 1st Bundesliga from 2005 to 2008 for ASVÖ Wulkaprodersdorf , with whom he also participated in the European Club Cup 2006, and in the Croatian 1st league on the top board of ŠK Brda Split .
