The SV Wulkaprodersdorf , in the long form chess club Wulkaprodersdorf is a chess club in the market town of Wulkaprodersdorf in Burgenland . The club has been a member of the Austrian Chess League since the 2005/06 season , where it has won the runner-up title three times on its success card.

history

The founding years

Already at the end of 1986, on the initiative of Johann Kroyer, there were initial discussions with some chess interested parties regarding the establishment of a local chess club. The constituent meeting on January 30th, 1987 elected the first board with President Leopold Semeliker, chairman Johann Kroje, treasurer Johann Glavanich, secretary Josef Knapp and five other board members. Johann Glavanich has been running the association since 1989, actively supported by the deputy chairman Josef Knapp. Thanks to donations from some business people, the community and more and more of the General Sports Association of Austria, a basic set of necessary chess utensils could be purchased. Based on this financial basis, it was constantly expanded and modernized, so in 2000 electronic clocks were used for the first time in the regional league.

In the spring of 1987 the following ranking was determined in an internal tournament:

  1. Günter Selinger
  2. Josef Knapp
  3. Johann Glavanich
  4. Ferdinand Wutschitz
  5. Hans Gornik
  6. Matthias Martinschitz
  7. Leopold Semeliker
  8. Dieter Glavanich

With this squad the game was started in the championship 1987/88. Many new players made it necessary to name a second team for the 1988/89 season. In the third year of participation in the championship, that is, in the 1989/90 game year, a championship title and promotion could be celebrated for the first time. Many more followed, outstanding was the promotion to the national league in the 1999/2000 game year and the title of Burgenland youth team champion in 2001. The activity of the club's players is also demonstrated by the active participation of many players in various tournaments, with some considerable successes such as for example the title in the B tournament of the international tournament in Baden or some category wins.

Some top players have found their way to the club, led by Fidemeister Roland Schweda. It is largely thanks to his dedication and commitment that the club has achieved this strength. For the first time, the club attracted attention by winning the Burgenland regional league in the 2003/04 season. Thus the SV Wulkaprodersdorf rose to the 2nd Bundesliga East.

Promotion to the Bundesliga

Already in the following season 2004/05 the club achieved a big sensation, because the Wulkaprodersdorfer, who had the second lowest Elo average of all teams, got into a real frenzy and secured the championship title with half a board point ahead of SK Baden . The success was all the more remarkable since it was achieved without legionaries. The players in the championship team were made up as follows: IM Norbert Sommerbauer (6.0 points / 11 points), FM Roland Schweda (6.0 / 11), FM Helmut Kummer (6.0 / 11), MK Herbert Rudolf (6 , 0/11), MK Andreas Kremsner (7.5 / 11), Peter Steinwender (2.0 / 6), Peter Hacker (2.5 / 4) and Franz Wild (0.5 / 1).

In the Bundesliga, however, the deployment of legionnaires could no longer be dispensed with. With the Slovak Tomáš Likavský , the German Rainer Polzin and the Czech Radek Kalod , three strong grandmasters were committed to strengthen the team. Nevertheless, the Austrians Roland Schweda, with 9.5 out of 11 possible points, and Norbert Sommerbauer, with 8.5 out of 11 possible points, were the most efficient players in the 2005/06 promotion season . In the end, SV Wulkaprodersdorf missed the championship title by just one point on the board compared to Union Styria Graz .

Nevertheless, SV Wulkaprodersdorf had every reason to cheer, because the second team qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga East by winning the Burgenland state championship title, with which the club was represented in the two highest leagues. However, this joy should only last a year, because at the end of the 2006/07 season the second team was relegated again.

The successful run continued for the first team. SV Wulkaprodersdorf also finished the 2006/07 season as vice state champion, with which the club finally established itself as the top team in Austrian chess. Although there was a small slump in the 2008/09 season , when SV Wulkaprodersdorf only reached ninth place and thus barely escaped relegation, the second place in the 2010/11 season and three in the 2011/12 season proved has come back.

In the 2009/10 season, the second team again won the Burgenland state championship, which was associated with promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga East. But this time too, the joy should not last long, because at the end of the 2011/12 season the second team had to relegate.
