The SK Hohenems , in long form the Hohenems chess club , is a chess club founded in 1926 in the municipality of Hohenems in Vorarlberg . The club has been in the top division since the 1995/96 season. On the success card is winning the championship title in the Austrian Chess League in the seasons 2003/04 and 2013/14 .

history

SK Hohenems was founded on June 12, 1926. Otto Monz became the first chairman. In 1927, under the new chairman Martin Vogel, he joined the Vorarlberg Chess Association; The Habsburg inn became a clubhouse and was to remain so until 1992.

In 1936 SK Hohenems also took over the management of the Vorarlberg Chess Association. Since Jewish players were granted access to the club in the 1930s, the Nazis prohibited gaming in March 1938. In May 1938, the blockade was lifted again, but game operations gradually came to a standstill. As a result, Wilhelm Waibel resigned as chairman of the SK Hohenems and as president of the Vorarlberg Chess Association.

In 1942 the SK Hohenems was dissolved. Already shortly after the end of the Second World War , efforts were made to resume games, but the French occupiers initially prohibited club operations. It was therefore not until 1947 that the association was re-established.

The SK Hohenems won the first Vorarlberg state championship title in 1953. From 1962 the club began to specifically promote the youth. In 1973 80 pupils were registered with the association and in 1978 chess was introduced as an optional subject in schools.

At the end of the 1980s, SK Hohenems developed into the leading club in Vorarlberg. In 1994 SK Hohenems won the championship title in the State League B West for the first time, but failed to qualify for the State League A.

Promotion to the State League A.

In the 1994/95 season , the SK Hohenems won again the championship title in the State League B West and again qualified for the promotion tournament. With wins against the Donaustadt chess club (4: 2) and ESV Austria Graz (4: 2) in a defeat against SG Stein / Steyr (2.5: 3.5), SK Hohenems secured first place and promotion to the state league A. IM Valery Atlas (2.0 points / 3 games), IM Georg Danner (2.0 / 3), IM Vladimir Kostić (2.5 / 3), Heinz Grabher (2.0 / 3), FM Guntram Gärtner (1.5 / 3) and MK Kurt Hagen (0.5 / 3) were in action for the SK Hohenems.

Although, apart from the German grandmaster Jörg Hickl and Liechtenstein's Valery Atlas , the games were mostly played with Austrian players, SK Hohenems managed to stay out of the league in the following years. In the 1997/98 season and the 2000/01 season , absolute top placings were achieved by winning the Vice State Champion title.

At the same time as the Bundesliga team, SK Hohenems built a second team in which young players also played. The second team was able to qualify for the State League B in 1997 and successfully assert itself in this.

Championship title for SK Hohenems

In the 2003/04 season , which incidentally was the first after the introduction of the Austrian Chess League , the SK Hohenems reached its preliminary climax in the club's history. The first team secured the Austrian championship title unbeaten with eight wins and three draws.

The second team followed suit in the second Bundesliga West in the 2004/05 season and won the championship title. The squad was composed as follows: IM Arik Braun (Germany; 5.0 points / 8 games), GM Michael Bezold (Germany; 6.0 / 8), IM Guntram Gärtner (Austria; 2.0 / 5), MK Heinz Grabher (Austria; 5.5 / 11), MK Günter Amann (Austria; 1.5 / 2), FM Fred Feistenauer (Austria; 3.5 / 8), FM Dimitry Atlas (Liechtenstein; 7.5 / 11) , Rene Levy (France; 0.5 / 1), Matthias Burschowsky (Austria; 3.0 / 4), Christof Tschohl (Austria; 1.0 / 4) and Robert Sandholzer (Austria; 2.5 / 4).

2012/13 season

SK Hohenems is now contesting its 18th season in the top division without interruption. The club is one of the “evergreens” of the Austrian Bundesliga. Only the Austrian record champions SK Merkur Graz and SC Die Klagenfurter , each with 25 game years, and WSV ATSV Ranshofen and SK Hietzing Wien , each with 19 participations in a row, have a better record, and SK VÖEST Linz was also first class for 18 years in a row . SK Hohenems is in a unique position in the Bundesliga with its participation in all game years. In addition, SK Hohenems has been taking part in the second-highest league with a second team without interruption since 1997. This balance is supplemented by 16 Vorarlberg state championship titles and 19 victories in the Vorarlberg state cup.

The main reason for these successes is the exemplary youth work of the association, which is also documented by the Vorarlberg Chess Olympiad . This event for children and young people was held for the 25th time in 2013 and has a record turnout with an average of more than one hundred participants.
