State Chess League A 1996/97
The 1996/97 season was the 22nd season of the Austrian chess State League A . SK Ottakring and SK Pinggau-Friedberg had risen from the State League B.
While Ottakring achieved relegation, SK Pinggau-Friedberg had to relegate together with SC Inter Salzburg .
The SK Merkur Graz successfully defended his title by six points.

The competitions took place from October 18 to 20, 1996 in Fürstenfeld , from November 15 to 17, 1996 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee , on January 25 and 26, 1997 in Traun and from February 28 to March 2, 1997 in Vienna .

Qualifying tournament for the State League A 1997/98
The qualifying tournament for the State League A took place in Vienna from April 11th to 13th . The participants were the RbEJ Gleisdorf (winner of the State League B South), the SK Absam (winner of the State League B West) and with the SG Austria Wien / Husek and the SC Wien-Donaustadt the two first place winners of the State League B East. Gleisdorf and Absam secured the first two places and thus rose to the State League A.
