The defending champion SK Merkur Graz was able to prevail with a lead of 8.5 points. For the reported team squads of the participating clubs, see the team squad of the Austrian State League A in Chess 1990/91 .

Events

The competitions of the preliminary round took place on October 13 and 14, 1990, from November 9 to 11, 1990, on January 19 and 20, 1991, on February 2 and 3, 1991 and on February 16 and 17, 1991 The relegation play-off was held from March 22nd to 24th, 1991.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the twelve teams competed in a simple round-robin tournament . It was planned that for the teams in places five to eight the season was over after the preliminary round, while the first and the last four places should be played in play-offs; the corresponding placements should result from the sum of the points from the preliminary round and playoff. However, the championship play-off did not take place due to a lack of interest from the qualified clubs, so that the first four places were awarded after the result of the preliminary round.
