The 2002/03 season was the 28th season of the Austrian State Chess League A and at the same time the last season before the competition was renamed "Bundesliga".

From the State League B were SV Tschaturanga and SK Absam ascended. While SV Tschaturanga was able to maintain relegation, SK Absam, together with SK Hietzing Wien and 1. SSK Mozart, had to relegate directly. Together with a restructuring of the State League B, the promotion and relegation regulation between State League A and State League B was changed. On the one hand, the number of seasons in State League B was reduced from four to three, but the winners of the seasons of State League B were directly entitled to promotion to State League A, while up to now they had to play two starting places in State League A in a qualifying tournament.

ESV Austria Graz became the new champions with one point ahead of SV Tschaturanga. The defending champion, the SK Graz / Frohnleiten syndicate - in the previous year still at the start as SK Merkur Graz - had to be content with sixth place. After the 2002/03 season, the playing community SK Graz / Frohnleiten dissolved, whereupon their place was taken by SV Frohnleiten .
