The 1978/79 season was the fourth season of the Austrian State Chess League .

After last year's champions SK Austria Wien withdrew their participation before the start and no team could be nominated for organizational reasons, only nine clubs took part.

The championship was SK Hietzing Wien , which distanced SK VÖEST Linz by two board points. In third place was the newcomer SK Merkur Graz . The second promoted SV Amstetten was able to maintain relegation.

Since the SK municipality Graz withdrew its team from the state league at the end of the season, the last placed SV ATSV Ranshofen was allowed to remain in the league. In order to add ten teams to the field of participants in the 1979/80 season, two teams were again allowed to climb into the state league.
