State Chess League 1988/89
The 1988/89 season was the 14th season of the Austrian State Chess League and at the same time the last in which the competition was held with 10 teams. In the previous year, the SK Schwaz rose, which immediately reached the runner-up.
Since the state league was increased to 12 teams for the 1989/90 season, no team had to relegate.
The defending champion SK Merkur Graz had to be content with third place, the new champion was WSV ATSV Ranshofen .

Events
The competitions took place on October 1 and 2, 1988, October 15 and 16, 1988, December 3 and 4, 1988, December 17 and 18, 1988, January 14 and 15, 1989, January 28 and 29. January 1989, 11th and 12th February 1989, 25th and 26th February 1989 and on 11th and 12th March 1989. The last double round was played centrally in Graz , the rest decentrally at the participating clubs.

Qualifying tournament for the State League A 1989/90
The qualifying tournament for the State League A took place from May 13th to 15th in Traun . The participants were the SK Concordia Graz (winner of the southern league), the SK Absam (winner of the western league) as well as with the SC Traun 67 and the SK Baden the two first place winners of the eastern league. Due to the increase in the state league to 12 teams (as in the future) two promotion places were awarded, which Absam and Baden secured.
