The 1989/90 season was the 15th season of the Austrian State Chess League A and at the same time the last in which the competition with teams of four was held. From the State League B were SK Baden and SK Absam ascended.
Both promoted players achieved relegation, but Baden withdrew his team after the season. In purely sporting terms, SK VÖEST Linz and SC Donaustadt would have been relegated, but Linz still managed to stay in the league through the withdrawal of SK Baden.
The competitions of the preliminary round took place on October 14th and 15th, 1989, November 11th and 12th 1989, from December 8th to 10th 1989, on January 20th and 21st, 1990 and on February 3rd and 4th, 1990. These competitions took place locally at the clubs involved, with two competitions being held at one venue. The play-off took place from March 2-4, 1990. The venue for the champions play-offs was Graz , and the relegation play-offs were held in Vienna .
Preliminary round
In the preliminary round, the twelve teams competed in a simple round-robin tournament . For the teams in places five to eight, the season was over after the preliminary round, while the first and the last four places were to be played in play-offs; the corresponding placements resulted from the sum of the points from the preliminary round and play-off.
Although the Graz team, leading after the preliminary round, suffered their only defeat of the season against the defending champion from Ranshofen, they were able to extend their lead and thus became Austrian champions.
The order was mixed up by the play-off, so that the SC Donaustadt had to relegate last and the SK VÖEST Linz as the penultimate of the relegation only escaped the withdrawal of the SK Baden .
