The SK Fürstenfeld , in the long form Schachklub Fürstenfeld, is a chess club founded in 1959 in the town of Fürstenfeld in Styria . With a three-year break, the club has been a member of the Austrian Federal Chess League since the 1992/93 season . Second place in the 2003/04 season is at the top of the club’s success card .

history

According to tradition, the royal game in Fürstenfeld was already played competitively in the 1920s. It was left to Ludwig Patheisky to inspire those interested in the organized game of chess in 1948; he was also the first chairman of the SK Fürstenfeld. Nevertheless, it was not until 1959 before chairman Viktor Lattmanig got the club going, because not only chess players from Fürstenfeld but also from the area were addressed. SK Fürstenfeld subsequently developed into a strong provincial club in terms of organization and skill level. After Viktor Lattmanig's death in 1965, Gerhard Michelitsch and Ludwig Patheisky, who was subsequently elected honorary chairman, followed and continued this development work. With the playing strength of the active players, the strength of the club could also be continuously increased. The SK Fürstenfeld became a key player in the Styrian chess scene.

Promotion to the State Chess League

In the 1991/92 season the time had finally come. The SK Fürstenfeld secured the championship title in the State League B South and was thus qualified for the promotion tournament to the State League A , which took place from May 1st to 3rd, 1992 in Fürstenfeld. The Styrians used their "home advantage" in the thrilling tournament, which was open to the end. After victories over 1. Wiener Neustädter SV (3.5: 2.5 board points), SK Absam (3.5: 2.5) and SG Ottakring / Sandleiten (4.5: 1.5) they celebrated the much acclaimed tournament victory, for which primarily the players on the back boards - the Hungarian legionnaire IM János Rigó came on board 1 to only one point - were responsible. This enabled them to qualify for the State Chess League for the first time. Even before the big favorites SK Absam, the 1. Wiener Neustädter SV took second place and thus also rose.

The SK Fürstenfeld established itself as a permanent part of the State Chess League A. The league was managed sovereign in the following years. Only in the 1999/00 season did the Fürstenfeld tremble when SK Zell am Ziller could only be separated by half a board point.

In the founding year of the Bundesliga, the 2003/04 season , SV Fürstenfeld achieved the biggest success in the club's history with the vice-state championship title. After third place was achieved in the 2004/05 season, the surprising end came in 2005/06 . Despite the almost unchanged squad, the team couldn't get past tenth place because some top performers left out. Since the nine-placed SV Schwarzach withdrew their team from the competition, they could have taken their place and still secured the league. The SK Fürstenfeld, however, waived for sporting reasons and entered the State League B.

Promotion to the Bundesliga

The SK Fürstenfeld used the following two years for sporting consolidation. In the 2007/08 season it was enough for the 2. Bundesliga center to be runner-up behind SV St. Veit an der Glan .

The time had come in the 2008/09 season. SK Fürstenfeld secured the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga middle with a lead of 4.0 board points over SG Wolfsberg and returned to the German Chess League. The squad consisted of the following games: GM József Pintér (Hungary; 4.0 points / 5 games), IM Gergely-Andras-Gyula Szabo (Romania, 1.0 / 2), IM Andreas Schenk (Germany; 4.5 / 8), 4 IM Günter Kuba (Austria; 5.0 / 11), IM Markus Wach (Austria; 4.0 / 6), FM Georg Kilgus (Austria; 7.5 / 11), FM Anton Postl (Austria; 0.0 / 1), Florian Pötz (Austria; 9.5 / 11), Georg Radnetter (Austria; 5.5 / 9) and Christoph Rabel (Austria; 2.0 / 2).

Since then, SK Fürstenfeld has belonged to the Austrian Chess League again and recently achieved quite remarkable results with places six ( 2009/10 ), four ( 2010/11 ) and four ( 2011/12 ).

In 2011, SK Fürstenfeld had reason to celebrate again, as the second team secured the Styrian national championship title, which means that the club was represented with two teams in the Bundesliga for the first time in the 2011/12 season. An important success for SK Fürstenfeld, as it enables a systematic development.
