Eduardas Rozentalis (born May 27, 1963 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian chess master . He is a multiple Lithuanian champion and has held the title of Grand Master since 1991 .

life and career

Eduardas Rozentalis learned to play chess at the age of seven from his parents of Jewish origin, who were masters themselves: his mother Ilana Epšteinaitė-Rozentalienė was two-time national champion of Lithuania (1962 and 1964), his father was a national player as a youth. He is a student of Isaka Vistaneckis and achieved numerous successes as a teenager. In 1981 he was national champion, in 1983 he played for the first time in a semi-final of the USSR championship. Between 1984 and 1989 he took part six times in the annual, heavily occupied USSR Young Masters tournaments for players under the age of 26, of which he was able to win three (1984, 1985, 1987). In 1990 he played his first open tournament abroad in Geneva and won it. In the following years he took part in numerous tournaments with good success; Among other things, he came in 1997 at the traditional tournament in Hastings on the shared first place. One of his best results was the win at the Open in Cappelle-la-Grande in February 2002 with 7.5 points from 9 games. Rozentalis won the Rilton Cup in Stockholm twice (2005/06 and 2009/10). At the FIDE World Championship in 1997 he was eliminated in the 2nd round against Sergey Tiviakov , in 1999 he lost in the 1st round against Levon Aronjan .

His preferred opening repertoire also includes the Spanish Exchange Variation and the Russian Defense .

In February 2015 he tops the Lithuanian rating list.

National team

With the Lithuanian national team, Rozentalis took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1992 , 1994 , 1996 , 1998 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 , 2010 and 2014 , as well as in the European Team Championships in 1992, 1997, 1999, 2005 and 2007.

In the 1980s Rozentalis played for Trud , with whom he reached the final of the European Club Cup in 1986 . In the 1990s he played in Lithuania for the team from Kaisé Vilnius , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup three times. In the German Federal Chess League he played from 1991 to 1994 for SV 03/25 Koblenz , from 1994 to 1996 for SK Zähringen , from 1997 to 2002 for SV Castrop-Rauxel and from 2006 to 2009 for TV Tegernsee . Since 2018 Rozentalis has been playing in the 1st Bundesliga with BCA Augsburg , for which he was previously active in the 2nd Bundesliga . He has been playing in the Austrian 1st Bundesliga since 2007 for SK Hohenems , with whom he became team champion in 2014 and took part in the European Club Cup. In France, Rozentalis has been playing for Cercle d'Echecs de Strasbourg since 2005 , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup in 2007, and in the Belgian Interclubs since 2008 he has played for Koninklijke Gentse Schaakkring Ruy Lopez , with whom he was champion in 2016 , and at the European Club Cup participated. In the Swedish Elitserien he played from 2011 to 2013 for the Viking team , with whom he became champions in 2012 ; since the 2015/16 season he has been playing for the Schacksällskapet Manhem . The Polish team championship won Rozentalis nine times ( 1996 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2006 , 2009 , 2011 and 2012 ) with Polonia Warsaw and in 2007 with WASKO Hetman Szopienice , with Polonia Warsaw , he also participated six times in the European Club Cup, where he reached second place with the team in 1997, 1998 and 2001 and achieved the best individual result on the third board in 2000. With the Xtracon Køge team , he won the Danish Skakligaen in 2019 , and he also played in Greek and Israeli team championships.
