history

Sports club Polonia celebrated its first major club success in 1946 as the first Polish soccer champion after World War II , which was followed six years later by winning the cup. After that, the club sank into insignificance and only rose to the Ekstraklasa , Poland's top division, for the first time in 1994 . But the debut failed - with just 4 wins out of 34 games, Polonia Warsaw was relegated immediately, before he succeeded two years later and he began to establish himself in the Ekstraklasa .

Even if Polonia Warsaw is overshadowed by league rivals Legia Warsaw , it was there that, at the turn of the millennium, it was able to celebrate its great national success for the first time in almost 50 years. In 1998 LKS Lodz failed, but in May 2000 the Polonia sports club secured their second Polish championship with a smooth 3-0 win at Legia Warsaw two game days before the end of the season. The following year Polonia Warsaw prevailed in the final of the Polish Cup competition with 2: 2 and 2: 1 against Górnik Zabrze .

At the international level, the Warsaw's successes remain manageable. After the 1998 championship narrowly missed, the sports club then failed in qualifying for the UEFA Cup (0-1, 0-1 against Dynamo Moscow ). A year later, the team failed to qualify for the UI Cup when they failed in the semifinals with 1: 1 and 1: 5 at FC Metz . Polonia Warsaw also did not survive the qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League after the 2000 championship. The Warsaw team was able to make up a 2-0 deficit at home against Panathinaikos Athens in the second round . In the second leg, however, the team failed with 1: 2. Having qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time, Warsaw failed in the first round this year as well as the following year. In the first round of the 2003 UEFA Intertoto Cup , both games were lost 3-0 and 2-1 against Tobol Qostanai from Kazakhstan.

In May 2006, the club rose from bottom of the table from the Ekstraklasa . On July 11, 2008, the club merged with Groclin Grodzisk and took its place in the Ekstraklasa .

The home ground of the Polonia Warsaw sports club is the Polonia Warsaw Stadium , which can hold around 7,000 spectators . The stadium is currently being modernized and, once the renovation work has been completed, will have a seating capacity of 16,000 and will be completely covered. A basketball hall with a capacity of 4,500 spectators and a covered 50 m swimming pool will also be connected to the property. The cost of the renovation is 180,000,000 zlotys (approx. 41,200,000 euros). After the club was sold in July 2012, it should start the 2012/13 season in the 4th division. However, the attempt of the owner of the license to found a new club under the name KS Katowice failed , which is why the club continues to play in the Ekstraklasa. After a sixth place in the table in the Ekstraklasa 2012/13 and continued financial bottlenecks, Polonia Warsaw then missed the license for the 2013/14 season. As a result, the club was downgraded to the fifth class 4th division by the Polish association. In the meantime, the club was able to work its way up to the 2nd division, but immediately after the promotion, a relegation followed, so that you are now back in the 3rd division.
