Władysław Jerzy Engel (born October 6, 1952 in Włocławek , Poland ) is a former Polish football player and coach .
Player career
Engel was only to be found briefly active on the football field. During this short-term career, he wore the jerseys of Junak Wloclawek , Polonia Warsaw and Hutnik Warszawa . Due to an injury, however, he had to give up this career path early.
Coaching career
As early as 1976, at the age of 22, Engel got into the coaching business and took over Hutnik Warsaw , for whom he was active as a player- coach . After he only looked after lower-class teams until 1981, the then national coach Antoni Piechniczek brought him to the supervisory staff of the Polish national team . Together with the team, they finished third at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Shortly thereafter, Engel turned back to club football and again looked after Hutnik Warsaw. With the beginning of the 1984/85 season he was assistant coach at the top Polish club Legia Warsaw , where he was head coach the following year. He stayed in this position for two years and was able to achieve the runner-up title with his team in 1986. In 1988 he moved abroad for the first time and should make a name for himself as a coach in Cyprus . His first club on the Greco-Turkish island was Apollon Limassol in 1988 . After he won second place in the league with Apollon in his second year, Engel signed with competitor AE Paphos . After only one season, the coach moved again within the league and henceforth looked after Nea Salamis Famagusta . He stayed there until 1996, with one exception between 1995 and 1996 when Engel was the manager of Legia Warsaw. With Aris Limassol , Engel took over his fourth Cypriot club in January 1997. After half a year it was over and he returned to Poland, where he was to work for the next three years as sports director for his former club Polonia Warsaw. He brought the team back to its former glory and was able to celebrate the runner-up title behind LKS Lodz in 1998. At the beginning of 2000, Engel took over the Polish national soccer team as coach. He rebuilt the team and installed aspiring players like Emmanuel Olisadebe , Marcin Żewłakow and Jacek Krzynowek . He also looked for footballers of Polish origin abroad in order to win them over to the national selection. So he strove, among other things, after the future German national player Miroslav Klose . He managed to reach the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan with the team . It was the first qualification in 16 years. In a group with South Korea , the USA and Portugal , however, the Poles failed in the preliminary round. The last game against the already qualified US-Americans could be won 3-1. It was the only win in the tournament. After the World Cup, Engel was replaced by Zbigniew Boniek . Until 2005 he no longer occupied the coaching position, but worked as a sports director and manager. It was only when Wisła Kraków made him an offer that Engel signed. In October of the same year he was dismissed by the club board for poor performance. In December 2005 he moved to Cyprus again, where he took over the top club APOEL Nicosia . With these, the coach won the national cup. In the league he led Nicosia in third place, two points behind champion Apollon Limassol. The two parties separated again in May 2006.
