Soheib Bencheikh (* 1961 in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia ) is a French Islamic religious leader and author. He is considered a progressive and advocate of French secularism .

Life

Bencheikh is a son of the Algerian diplomat Abbas el Hocine Bencheikh, who was rector of the Great Mosque in Paris from 1982 until his death in 1989. Soheib Bencheikh graduated in Islamic theology from al-Azhar University in Cairo , and from Université Libre de Bruxelles , Belgium . He received a doctorate in religious studies from the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), Paris , France . He was appointed Grand Mufti of Marseille in 1995 by Dalil Boubakeur , Rector of the Paris Mosque . In 2003 he is a founding member of the Conseil français du culte musulman .

Bencheikh is an anti-fundamentalist religious leader and an avowed opponent of zealous Islam. He is known as a reform-oriented theologian who is committed to interreligious dialogue . Among other things, he wrote the books Les Grandes Religions and Marianne et le Prophète: L'Islam dans la France laïque , his well-known work on the positions and opportunities for Muslims in secular democracies. He represents a modern Islam and described, among other things, education as the best protection of the honor and well-being of women (and not the hijab , which he says is not binding). In the dispute over the Mohammed cartoons published in 2005 and the subsequent, partly violent protests, Bencheikh defended the freedom of the press, which he considers "sacred".

Bencheikh intended to take part in the 2007 French presidential election, but missed the 500 mayors' signatures required to become an official candidate. For the 2012 presidential election , Bencheikh recommended voting for the far-right Front National rather than the incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy , whom he heavily criticized as an opportunist and populist. This was interpreted in various media as an election recommendation for the FN, from which Bencheickh, however, clearly distanced himself.
