The AE Paphos was a Cypriot football club from the city of Paphos . It was created in 2000 from the merger of the city's two clubs, APOP and Evagoras. The merger was carried out from an economic point of view, as both clubs were financially bad. In 2014 he merged with AEK Kouklia to form Paphos FC .

history

The club was formed in 2000 from the two local soccer clubs APOP and Evagoras. In addition to the economic reasons, it was also decisive that there was no permanent club in the first division in Paphos and that the fans felt the need to watch first division football all the time. The two original clubs were so-called "elevator teams", that is, they sometimes played in the top league, sometimes in the second. At the time of the merger, APOP was playing in the first division and Evagoras in the second division.

The new club played in the first division until 2005, but then rose. In the year in the second division, however, the new club achieved their greatest success so far by reaching the semi-finals of the Cypriot Cup (APOP succeeded twice). The semi-finals against AEK Larnaka went 1: 1 and 0: 0, so they were eliminated. In the same year they won the second division , were promoted, but relegated again after a bad season. By winning the championship in 2008 they managed to get promoted again, but the hopes of having a club permanently in the first division were not fulfilled by the new club. The 2009/10 season ended in 10th place.

Four years after their last promotion, they made the leap into the first division again in the 2011/12 season . The hopes of continuing to play first class after the 2012/13 season were not particularly high. After several points were deducted from the club due to financial difficulties, it was decided after the season for economic considerations to merge with the club AEK Kouklia, also from the region, to form a powerful team. The resulting club Paphos FC made it to the First Division .

General

The club's home games took place at Pafiako Stadium , a multi-purpose stadium in Paphos. It seats 11,000 and in 1992 was the venue for three games of the U-16 European Championships.

In addition to the soccer team, the club also had a youth academy that trains children from the age of 12.

Club colors and club crests

The club colors are blue and white, colors that the previous clubs wore. The coat of arms was formed from the two coats of arms of the associations of origin. It shows blue lines with the image of Evagoras Pallicarides in a circle in the middle. He was a resident of Paphos who fought for the independence of Cyprus and was executed by the British colonial power and the namesake of Evagoras FC.
