Zbigniew Kazimierz "Zibi" Boniek (born March 3, 1956 in Bydgoszcz , Poland ) is a former Polish football player and coach . Since the end of October 2012 he has been the President of the Polish Football Association .

Player career

In the club

The young Boniek began his career at the age of ten in 1966 at Zawisza Bydgoszcz before moving to the top club Widzew Lodz in 1975 . There he matured into a class player in attacking midfield and one of the biggest stars in the Polish league. In 1978 and 1980 Zibi Boniek was voted Poland's Footballer of the Year . Boniek led Widzew to two championships (1981 and 1982) before he accepted an offer from the top Italian club Juventus Turin and turned his back on his homeland.

At Juve , Zbigniew Boniek played together with Claudio Gentile , Michel Platini and Paolo Rossi in one of the best club teams of the 1980s. In his first season of the European Champions Cup, he met his old club Widzew Łódź in the semi-finals. Boniek's new team won 2: 0 and 2: 2 and made it to the final, which was lost to Hamburger SV 0: 1 with a goal from Felix Magath . But the next few years should be more successful: in 1983 he won the Italian Cup , 1984 championship and the European Cup Winners' Cup . One of his last appearances for the "Old Lady" was also one of his bitterest hours; at the national championship final against Liverpool FC there was a mass panic in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels , with 39 people killed ( Heysel disaster ). Juventus still won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1984/85 . He donated his prize for the victory to the victims of the disaster.

After the season Boniek turned his back on Turin and moved to AS Roma , where he turned out to be the reinforcement he was looking for in midfield. At the end of 1986 he finished sixth in the election for European Footballer of the Year and won the Italian Cup with Roma . In his last season in Italy he failed to succeed and the Pole ended his active career in 1988.

In the national team

In March 1976 Zbigniew Boniek played his first international match against Argentina in Krakow . With a good performance, he recommended himself for the Polish squad for the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . In the national team of coach Kazimierz Górski he played with players like Kazimierz Deyna , Robert Gadocha and Grzegorz Lato in the best Polish team in history, which won the silver medal in Montreal.

Two years later, the Pole took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina , where the Poles failed to build on the strong performances of the 1974 World Cup and Montreal , the second round was the final destination. Boniek completed his second world championship in 1982 . In Spain he scored three goals in the game against Belgium . His team finished the second final round first and secured third place. At the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , Boniek was part of the Polish squad for the last time , which, however, was far from the level of previous years and was eliminated in the second round.

In 2004, Zbigniew Boniek was elected by Pelé as the only Pole in the FIFA 100 , a list of the 125 best football players still alive in the world.
