Burkhard Malich (born November 29, 1936 in Schweidnitz , Silesia, today Świdnica , Poland) is a German chess grandmaster .

Life

Burkhard Malich studied German history from 1955 to 1960 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and received his doctorate in 1971. phil on the subject of late medieval German game allegories as a source of social history . He taught Byzantine Studies at the University of Halle until 2001 . He is married and has two children.

Malich began playing chess in 1948 at the age of 12 and won the GDR youth championships just three years later , and in 1953 he won the youth title a second time. In 1957 and 1973 Malich won the individual championships in the GDR and was also runner-up six times. At the international level, he qualified to participate in two zone tournaments in 1963 and 1974 and won the tournaments of Zinnowitz (three times in a row 1969–1971), Amsterdam (1971), Děčín (1976) and a year later in Leipzig .

Burkhard Malich was also successful in various team competitions, for example he was 10 times GDR team champion with SV Wissenschaft Halle and with the successor clubs SC Chemie Halle and Buna Halle . After the German reunification , Malich played in the 1991/92 season with Buna Halle and in 1994/95 with PSV Duisburg in the first German chess league . With Duisburg he also took part in the European Club Cup in 1994.

With the national team of the GDR Malich took part in all eight chess Olympiads between 1958 and 1972 and was involved in winning the bronze medal at the European team championships in Kapfenberg in 1970 . In 2004 he became world champion with the German senior team, in 2004 and 2005 senior team European champion.

In 1962 he became International Master , the title of Grand Master in 1975 from FIDE . His Elo rating is 2323 (as of April 2016), his highest rating of 2535 he reached in January 1977 and January 1978.
