Ferenc Berkes (born August 8, 1985 in Baja ) is a Hungarian chess player .

In 2001 he became International Master , and since 2002 he has been Grand Master . With his highest rating to date of 2706 in September 2011, he was behind Péter Lékó and Zoltán Almási in third place in the Hungarian and 41st place in the FIDE rankings.

Single successes

Berkes became Hungarian U12 and U14 champions. In 2002 he was U18 world champion in Heraklion . At the U20 Junior World Championship in Istanbul in 2005, he finished second behind Şəhriyar Məmmədyarov .

In December 2001 he won a First Saturday GM tournament in Budapest . At the Moscow Aeroflot Open in February 2004 he was only half a point behind the winner Sergei Rublewski . In April 2004 he won the Zalaegerszeg Grand Prix ( category 13), in November 2006 the Tenkes Kupa in Harkány and in December 2006 the 5th Subasic Memorial in Zenica, Bosnia .

He was Hungarian individual champion in 2004 and 2007 in Budapest, 2010 in Szeged , 2012 in Hévíz , 2013 in Gyula , 2014 and 2016 in Zalakaros and 2018 in Budapest.

National team

He was very successful at the U18 European Championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003, which were held in Balatonlelle on Lake Balaton . In 2001, when the Hungarian national team finished fourth, he received an individual gold medal for his result of 5.5 out of 7 on the first board. In 2002 Hungary finished fourth and Berkes received an individual bronze medal for his result of 4.5 out of 7 on the top board. In 2003 Hungary won the tournament. This time he scored 6.5 out of 7 on the first board with an Elo performance of 2892. At the Mitropa Cup in Leipzig in 2002 he received the bronze medal with the Hungarian national team and an individual gold medal for his result of 7.5 out of 9 on the second board ( Elo performance 2740). For the Hungarian national team he took part in the chess Olympiads in 2004 , 2006 , 2008, 2010 and 2012 with a positive overall result of 33.5 points from 51 games (+20 = 27 −4, 65.6%). At the 2008 Chess Olympiad , he received an individual bronze medal for his score of 6.5 out of 9 on the first reserve board. Berkes also participated in the European Team Championships in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2099, 2011 and 2015, in part, in which he and the team took third place in 2011 and, 2015.

Club teams

He played in Hungarian (for ASE Paks ), Croatian, French (for the Club de Vandœuvre-Echecs ), Greek, Spanish ( 2014 for the master Mérida Patrimonio de la Humanidad ), Turkish, Slovenian (for the ŠK ZM Branik Maribor ) , Slovak (for the 1st PŠK Aqua Rimavská Sobota ) and Serbian (for SK Spartak , with whom he was team champion in 2008) team championship, as well as in the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) in the 2005/06 season for the Slough Sharks . In the Bosnian Premijer Liga he played for ŠK Bihać in 2007 and 2008 and since 2011 for ŠK Bosna Sarajevo . With Sarajevo he won the team championship in Neum in 2011 and took part in the European Club Cup in the same year . In Austria he played for 1. Wiener Neustädter SV , in the highest Austrian league, the Chess League , most recently in the 2003/04 season . In Germany he played in the 2003/04 season on the top board of the Preetzer TSV in the 2nd Bundesliga North . From the 2007/08 season to the 2013/14 season he played in the German 1st Bundesliga at the Eppingen chess club . In the 2008/09 season he had the best performance of all participating players in the German Federal Chess League with 8.5 points from 10 games and an Elo rating of 2848. In the Danish Skakligaen , Berkes will play for the Xtracon Køge team in the 2019/20 season .
