Balatonlelle is a city on the south-east bank of Lake Balaton in Hungary . It is located in Somogy County in the small area of Fonyód and has 4824 inhabitants (January 1, 2011) on the flat shore of Lake Balaton.

Like the neighboring town of Balatonboglár, the city has a small port on Lake Balaton, a train station and a stop on the Budapest – Nagykanizsa railway line , a motorway connection to the M7 and is geared towards tourism .

history

The region around Lake Balaton has been settled for around 6000 years, in 1211 the area was taken over by the Tihany Abbey, the place itself was first mentioned in a document in 1229 as Felső-Gamás . In 1550 the place came under Turkish rule, most of the inhabitants fled and only returned after the reconquest in 1580. Until the 18th century Lelle was owned by the noble Majtényi family and then came into the property of the noble family of the Szalays , at this time the school system began in the village in 1720. In 1848 Lelle received the status of a market town , from 1864 onwards the name officially changed to the name Balatonlelle, which is still valid today . In 1882, as part of an administrative reform, several places were merged and Balalonlelle became the center of a small community together with the neighboring villages of Boglár , Faluszemes and Őszöd . In the decades after 1895, a school was built and expanded in the village, and the place itself, like its neighboring towns, developed into a holiday center on Lake Balaton.

In 1978 Lelle merged with Boglár to Boglárlelle, but this connection was dissolved again in 1991. During this unification, the community was elevated to a city in 1986, and both places carry this status even after the separation.
