Loren Stillman (born June 14, 1980 in London ) is an American jazz musician ( alto saxophonist , composer and band leader) who lives in post-bop .

biography

Stillman grew up in Croton-on-Hudson (New York) and studied from 1998 at the Manhattan School of Music and from 2002 at the New School University , a. a. with Lee Konitz and David Liebman . He became known in the early 2000s for his collaboration with John Abercrombie in the Trio Jackalope ( Saltier Than Ever , 2002), with Eivind Opsvik's Overseas project and the formation Quadrant with Christophe Schweizer . In 1996 he had already recorded his first album ( Cosmos ) on Soul Note , which earned him the status of a “child prodigy” (Cook / Morton). Further albums for labels like Nagel-Heyer , Fresh Sound (New Talent) and SteepleChase followed with their own formations.

Stillman, whose talent has been praised by Downbeat , Jazziz, Jazzthing , JazzTimes and National Public Radio , has worked with Charlie Haden , Carla Bley , Paul Motian , Andy Milne ’s Dapp Theory , Michele Rosewoman , Joe Lovano , Vic Juris , Sunna Gunnlaugs , Michael Formanek ( The Distance , ECM, 2016), Samo Šalamon and the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra .

In July 2019 (as of August 2020) the New York saxophonist Loren Stillman moved to his new adopted home of Cologne .
