Christophe Schweizer (born April 9, 1968 in Bern ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( trombone , composition , band leader).

Live and act

As a child, Schweizer took violin, trombone and piano lessons. From 1988 to 1989 he studied at the Jazz School and the Conservatory of Bern. Since 1989 he has worked with Michael Wertmüller's band So nicht! together, with whom he recorded his own compositions in 1990.

From 1992 to 1993 he studied at the Mannes College of Music a . a. with Conrad Herwig , Dave Taylor , Richie Beirach , Billy Hart and Phil Markowitz . After a stay in Banff (Canada) , where he played in the Opera House orchestra and worked with the flautist Robert Dick , Schweizer moved to New York.

After working with the big bands of Phil Woods and Benny Bailey as well as Joe Lovano and Kenny Werner , he became a member of the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band , with which he toured Russia and performed with the Mingus Big Band and the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra .

He continued his big band work with the NDR Big Band (1998), the Guimaraes Festival Big Band under the direction of Bob Mintzer , Gianluigi Trovesi and Kenny Wheeler (since 2002), lead trombonist of the EBU Jazz Orchestra in Istanbul (2003) and member of the Jazz Big Band Graz continues. In smaller formations he worked a. a. with Lee Konitz , Steve Swallow , Dave Douglas and Paulo Moura .

Since the mid-1990s, Schweizer has led a number of his own bands. His first formation was Normal Garden , which he founded in 1994, with whom he a. a. 2000 went on a European tour and in 2002 released the album Physique on OmniTone . In 1996 he founded the group 5SIX7 , with whom he toured Europe in 2000, 2002 , 2003 and 2005 and recorded several albums. Another group is Full Circle Rainbow in collaboration with Ohad Talmor , with whom he has performed since 1997. The quintet Moonsun followed in 2000 (with Dave Binnay , among others ), with whom he performed at the Braga Jazz Festival in Portugal in 2004 .

In 2001 he founded the group Quadrant X with Mark Dresser , Loren Stillman and Dan Weiss , and in 2003 the sextet for electronic improvisation music Normal Collision . In 2002 he also founded a duo with Michael Wertmüller in Hamburg, which expanded with Olaf Rupp to form the Speedmaster trio .
