Dan Weiss

Dan Weiss (born March 4, 1977 in Tenafly ) is an American drummer and tabla player of the Modern Creative , who has also emerged as a composer . He also plays Indian classical music .

Live and act

Weiss was influenced early on by his father, who played guitar. Initially based on Led Zeppelin (especially John Bonham ) and soon afterwards on Rush , he played for many years in rock bands. He came to jazz through his drum teacher . He studied jazz percussion and classical composition at the Manhattan School of Music , then took lessons from Samir Chatterjee , John Riley , Jamey Haddad ( frame drum ) and David Noon . With Chatterjee, whom he calls his guru, he had lessons in Indian classical music for nine years and he played with him in Calcutta .

Weiss leads his own trio (with Thomas Morgan and the pianist Jacob Sacks ), plays in a duo with Miles Okazaki and Ari Hoenig and has a joint band project with Lorenzo Feliciati, Joel Harrison, Roy Powell and Cuong Vu . In 2005 he recorded a solo album Tintal Drum Set Solo , which was followed by Now Yes When (2006) with his trio and Tabla Solo in 2007 (traditional tabla music arranged for drum sets ). He also belonged to the bands of Eivind Opsvik , David Binney , Rudresh Mahanthappa , Rez Abbasi , Laurent Coq / Miguel Zenon ( Rayuela ), Florian Weber ( Biosphere ) and Jackson Harrison as well as to the drone-doom band Bloody Panda and he contributed to Punjab on Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans by Ryan Truesdell at. His composition Trio for Piano, Violin and Percussion was premiered in 2008; his Layas: For Piano, Drums and Orchestras was performed in Portugal in 2010 under the direction of Ohad Talmor .

Weiss works with Indian musicians and is a faculty member at the New School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. He toured in Europe, Asia (including playing Indian classical music in India) and South America and, in addition to those already mentioned, played with Uri Caine , Ravi Coltrane , Vijay Iyer , Lee Konitz , Dave Liebman , Anna-Lena Schnabel and the Village Vanguard Orchestra .

In 2010 he won the Rising Star category in the Down Beat Critics' Poll for percussion.
