Miles Okazaki

Miles Okazaki (born December 18, 1974 in Pullman , Washington ) is an American jazz guitarist and composer .

Okazaki grew up in Port Townsend in the northwestern United States. From 1997 he lived in New York City , where he studied at Harvard University , the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School with Rodney Jones , Kenny Barron , Manny Albam and Anthony Davis , among others . Since then he has worked in the local jazz scene a. a. with Stanley Turrentine , Lenny Pickett , Kenny Barron, Steve Coleman , Jonathan Finlayson , Ohad Talmor and Jane Monheit ( Taking a Chance on Love , 2004). In 2005 he was a finalist at the Thelonious Monk Guitar Competition . From the beginning of the 2000s he was also active as a composer for smaller ensembles. In 2007 he recorded his debut album Mirror (among others with Christof Knoche ; Generations was created in 2008 with an expanded line-up with David Binney and the vocalist Jen Shyu ). In his production Figurations ( Sunnyside , 2012) he played with Miguel Zenón , Thomas Morgan and Dan Weiss . In 2017 he released the album Trickster (Pi). At the end of 2018 he released a 6-CD box on which he recorded all 70 pieces by Thelonious Monk . In 2019 he delivered one of the most interesting concerts with a solo program with Monk titles at the JazzFest Berlin . The album Trickster's Dream was released in mid-2020 , which he recorded with Matt Mitchell , Anthony Tidd and Sean Rickman .

He lives in Brooklyn .
