Rodney Jones
Rodney Bruce Jones (born August 30, 1956 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American guitarist (also bassist) of modern jazz .
Live and act
Jones is the son of a minister; his uncle Eugene Wayman Jones has emerged as a pianist and choir director. Jones, grew up in Nashville and New York City and took cello and piano lessons as a child . He learned to play the guitar as an autodidact from the age of seven and was already working on recordings of folk music at the age of thirteen . He then took private lessons with guitarists like Bruce Johnson and studied improvisation with John Lewis at City College ; he also played in its ensemble. In 1974 he appeared in Five Spots with Jaki Byard before he was a member of the groups of Chico Hamilton and Dizzy Gillespie from 1975 to 1979 ; he toured the world with the latter. He also played his own albums. In the early 1980s he was initially a studio musician, emerged as musical director for Ruth Brown and played on the television show by Bill Cosby . From 1983 he worked as a guitarist and arranger for Lena Horne .
He also played with Kenny Kirkland , Ronnie Burrage , Tommy Flanagan , Hank Jones , Hilton Ruiz , Maceo Parker , Kenny Burrell , Stan Getz and Jimmy Smith . He appeared with Jimmy McGriff at the JazzFest Berlin in 1993 . Currently (2019) he leads a quartet that includes Dabin Ryu (piano), Kenny Davis (bass) and Conner Parks (drums).
Jones has been a lecturer at the Manhattan School of Music since 1988 and has also been involved in film music productions.
