Carmen Irina Petrescu (born June 19, 1941 in Bucharest ; † March 19, 2013 there ) was a Romanian actress .

Life

Carmen Irina Petrescu was born in Bucharest as the daughter of a doctor and a nurse. Petrescu originally wanted to study architecture following her childhood love, but her parents were against it. They wanted her to study philology and French. Since she did not pass the entrance examination and was discovered by the Romanian director Savel Stiopul during one of her singing appearances in a restaurant, she began studying at the renowned national university of theater and film art "Ion Luca Caragiale" in Bucharest.

Already during her student days she made her successful film debut in Liviu Ciulei's Die Donau burns and starred in films such as Ich will not marry (1961) and The Stranger on the Coast (1962). For her role in Mihai Iacob's Der Fremde (1963) she received the Acting Award of the national film festival in Mamaia . In The Story of My Stupidity , directed by Hungarian Márton Keleti , Petrescu played for the first time in a foreign film production. She received further awards for best actress in 1965 in Mar del Plata for Lucian Pintilies Sunday at six and in 1969 at the Moscow Film Festival for her role in Gheorghe Vitanidis ' A Woman for One Season .

From 1964 she was engaged at the Bucharest National Theater , in the 1970s and 1980s at the Teatrul Bulandra .

Petrescu was never married in her life. She died of cancer.
