Career

Pintilie studied at the Bucharest Theater and Film School ( Institutul de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică “IL Caragiale” ) and, after completing his studies, staged numerous plays at the Bucharest Theater Bulandra . As an actor he worked in the 1963 film Valurile Dunării (The waves of the Danube) by the director Liviu Ciulei . His debut as a cinema director came with the film Duminică la ora 6 (Sunday at 6, 1965). Reconstituirea (The Reconstruction, 1968) was his second film in Romania. From 1974 to 1988 he worked at the Paris Théâtre national de Chaillot . At the same time, he also worked on the staging of several operas. For Yugoslav television he directed the film Paviljon broj VI (Hospital No. 6, 1978) based on the short story of the same name by Anton Chekhov .

For the filming of De ce trag clopotele, Mitică? (Why do I ring the bells, Mitică? 1982) he returned to Romania. However, the film was banned while it was being shot and its premiere did not take place until 1990.

He continued his work as a film director in Romania after his re-naturalization in 1990. His post-revolutionary works include important films in Romanian cinema: Balanța (Le Chêne - Tree of Hope, 1992), Un été inoubliable (An unforgettable summer, 1994), Prea târziu (Murder underground, 1996), Terminus Paradies (1998), După-amiaza unui torționar ( A torturer's afternoon, 2001), Niki et Flo (Niki and Flo, 2003). Lucian Pintilie also wrote the scripts for the films “Prea târziu”, “Terminus Paradies” and “După-amiaza unui torționar”.
