Jonathan Finlayson

Jonathan Finlayson (* 1982 in Berkeley ) is an American jazz trumpeter whom the New York Times described as “a concise and often surprising trumpeter”.

Life

Finlayson began playing the trumpet when he was ten when he attended public school in Oakland , where he was raised. Under the mentorship of trumpeter Robert Porter, a veteran of the bebo era , he made his first appearances in his hometown, including a jam session at the Bird Cage . In New York City he studied at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music with Eddie Henderson , Jimmy Owens and Cecil Bridgewater . Since the beginning of the 2000s he has worked a. a. with Steve Coleman , also with Mary Halvorson , Steve Lehman , Tomas Fujiwara ( The Air Is Different , 2012), Ches Smith , David Virelles ( Continuum 2012). and Liberty Ellman ( Last Desert , 2020). In the field of jazz he was involved in 20 recording sessions between 2001 and 2012. In 2013, Finlayson released his debut album Moment and the Message on Pi Recordings , which featured Miles Okazaki , Damion Reid , David Virelles and Keith Witty. In 2018 3 Times Around (Pi Recordings) was released, which Finlayson had recorded with Steve Lehman, Brian Settles , Matt Mitchell , John Hébert and Craig Weinrib .

The trumpeter is not to be confused with the Australian actor Jon Finlayson (1938–2012).
