Brian Settles

Brian L. Settles (born September 16, 1980 ) is an American jazz musician ( soprano and tenor saxophone , flute ).

Live and act

A native of Washington, DC, Settles attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts , then studied at New School University with Reggie Workman and Chico Hamilton , then at Howard University with Charlie Young, where he received his Masters in 2008. Since then he has worked with musicians such as Gil Scott-Heron , Jason Moran , Steve Neil , Tomas Fujiwara ( The Air Is Different , 2012) and the bassist / tuba player Tom Abbs , with whom he first recorded for CIMP in 2003 . He was also a member of the Jump Arts Orchestra , directed by Butch Morris . In 2011 he released his debut album Secret Handshake (with Neil Podgurski, Corcoran Holt , Jeremy Carlstedt , Jean Marie Collatin-Faye), followed by Folk (2013). In the field of jazz he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 2003 and 2014. In the mid-2010s he worked with his own trio, consisting of Tarus Mateen and Jeremy Carlstedt, as well as a trio with Jonathan Finlayson and Mike Pride . He is married to the singer Jessica Boykin Settles.
