Steve Neil
Steve Neil (born November 16, 1953 in Dayton , Ohio , † March 15, 2010 in Hyannis ) was an American jazz musician (bass guitar, double bass, percussion).
Live and act
Neil's mother played jazz, and he learned the saxophone and guitar as a child . He started playing bass when he was thirteen. He began his professional career as a bass guitarist in a band called The Chairmen of the Board in Detroit in 1972 , in which he played until 1974 and also toured Europe. He then became a member of Pharoah Sanders ' band , to which he belonged for five years. In between he worked briefly with Elvin Jones , then in Yusef Lateef's band . On the west coast he worked with Harold Land , then on the east coast with Mary Lou Williams . 1977 Neil played in the Big Band of Frank Foster and Gil Evans ( Priestess ), 1979 Sun Ra . In 1977 he performed with Hannibal Marvin Peterson , George Adams and Diedre Murray at the Jazz Festival in Antibes ( Hannibal in Antibes , Enja ).
In the 1980s he went a. a. toured with Sam Rivers , Charles Tolliver in 1983 and Beaver Harris in 1985. In the 1990s there was again a collaboration with Pharoah Sanders for his Verve album Message from Home . He also worked with Frank Lowe ( Vision Blue , 1997), Michael Marcus and Sonny Simmons ( Judgment Day , CIMP 1996) and most recently with Carl Grubbs in 2005 . Neil is involved in 23 recordings in the field of jazz. According to Ian Carr , his main influences are Sun Ra, Monk and Mingus .
