Diedre Murray

Diedre Murray (born November 28, 1958 in New York City ) is an American creative jazz cellist and composer .

Murray received musical support from an early age; there were many amateur musicians in her mother's family. She took cello lessons in school and played in jazz rock bands as a teenager . During this time she performed with James Brown at the Apollo Theater . In the late 1970s she was a member of Hannibal Marvin Peterson's band , with whom she also toured Europe. In the 1980s she played with musicians such as Leroy Jenkins , Muhal Richard Abrams and the Henry Threadgill Sextet . With Fred Hopkins she formed the duo Stringdom , which also formed the core for the quartet Sync with Elliott Sharp and Gerry Hemingway and a quartet with Newman Taylor Baker and Brandon Ross . She also worked with Julius Hemphill , Butch Morris , Archie Shepp , Jason Kao Hwang , Larry Young, and Oscar Brown .

Murray composed various stage works for music and dance theater. She plays jazz , improvised music as well as contemporary classical music. She is also active as a producer and curator on the New York jazz scene.
