Reggie Workman

Reginald David Workman (born June 26, 1937 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz bassist and university professor.

Live and act

Workman took piano lessons as a child and first learned the tuba in high school before turning to the double bass . He first played with Al Gray , then in rhythm and blues groups. He then went to New York City , where he worked for Lee Morgan . Then he worked for Jackie McLean , Kenny Dorham , Gigi Gryce (1958/59), Red Garland (1959), Roy Haynes and John Coltrane ( Africa / Brass 1960/61). He was then a member of the band of James Moody before 1962-1964 ( Free for All ) at the Jazz Messengers of Art Blakey played and also went to Japan and European tour with them. He was then a member of the groups of Al Heath , Yusef Lateef (1965), Herbie Mann (1966) and Thelonious Monk (1967). He has also performed with musicians such as Eric Dolphy , Elvin Jones , Freddie Hubbard , Wayne Shorter ( JuJu , 1964 and Adam's Apple , 1966), Lee Morgan ( Search for the New Land 1964), Bill Dixon , Roy Ayers , Archie Shepp , Andrew Hill , Gary Bartz , Pharoah Sanders ( Karma , 1969) or Bobby Hutcherson and joined the New York Jazz Quartet and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra . At the beginning of the 1970s he completed a university degree and played in the bands of Alice Coltrane , Charles Tolliver and Max Roach . He then worked for Babatunde Olatunji's Center for African Cultures .

Since 1987 he has been a professor at the New School for Social Research . He also maintained musical projects with which he also recorded, such as “Duet” with Dee Dee Bridgewater , “Super Jazz Trio” with Tommy Flanagan and Joe Chambers and “Images” with Marilyn Crispell , Don Byron , Gerry Hemingway and Jeanne Lee . Among the recordings from the 1990s, the CDs with Mal Waldron deserve special mention, some of which were made in Europe.

He is also a permanent member of the formation Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Andrew Cyrille , who regularly invite guest musicians and publish CDs.

In addition, Workman played with musicians of different styles such as Aki Takase , Marion Brown , Horace Tapscott , Hank Jones , Frank Wess , Edward Vesala , Derek Bailey and Living Color . Few records appeared under Reggie Workman's name.

His daughter is the cellist Nioka Workman . In 2020 he received the title of Jazz Master of the National Endowment for the Arts and thus the highest honor in jazz in the USA.
