Nioka Workman

Nioka Workman (born November 16, 1963 ) is an American cellist , arranger and composer .

Nioka Workman, daughter of jazz bassist Reggie Workman , worked in various musical fields from the mid-1990s, including a. with Anthony Braxton ( Ensemble (New York) 1995 ), Steve Coleman , Greg Osby ( Symbols of Light (A Solution) , 2001), Miguel Zenón ( Awake ) and R&B musicians India Arie ( Acoustic Soul ), Beyoncé Knowles ( Dangerously in Love , 2003) and with hip-hop musicians such as Kanye West and Jay-Z . She is a member of the Uptown String Quartet , has played in ensembles from Kali Fasteau , Cooper-Moore , Anthony Davis , Avery Brooks / Craig Harris ( Harlem Gatehouse ) and in Reggie Workman's African-American Legacy Project . She works as a soloist and with her own band and with the Sojourner formation , which she co-founded , a jazz chamber ensemble. She also founded The Firey String Company (FSCO) and collaborated with various dance companies, for which she wrote and arranged commissioned works. Workman lives in the Bronx, New York .
